Answers to the most common questions

How do I turn off this custom background?

This is most likely macOS's native video effects, to turn them off:

  1. Trigger Hand Mirror
  2. Find a green rectangle with a camera icon in the Menu bar
  3. Under Hand Mirror, click "Background" to turn it off
I can't find the icon in the menu bar

This can be quite frustrating, try the following:

  1. Make sure theres enough space in the Menu bar, especially on displays with a notch macOS can run out of space to show all the icons. Try quitting or hiding other apps (try Command-dragging the icons out of the bar).
  2. Make sure you're not using a Menu bar icon manager-type app that might be hiding Hand Mirror.
  3. If you can find a way to trigger the camera in Hand Mirror (try clicking on the App icon from the Applications folder while the app is already open), navigate to Settings, and make sure that "Hide Menu Bar Icon" is toggled Off in Notch Trigger panel.
  4. In Settings, sometimes changing the Menu Bar Icon preference can make it appear.
